As a member of the AAPI community and as a South Asian American, I do know many AAPIs who would prefer to identify as white as opposed to people of color. I also think that there are levels of violence and brutality that Black Americans face that we don’t as a result of the privilege afforded by the model minority stereotype. I agree that there has been an erasure of AAPI history and our contribution, but I wouldn’t make that argument by equalizing our experience to those brought to this country as slaves or those whose land was stolen from them in a genocidal fashion. I think you are comparing misery, and while I’ve dealt with my fare share of racism as an AAPI woman, it’s nothing compared to the systemic inequity and violent racism that Black Americans face everyday, from every place. They cannot call the police for protection. I can in some places. That’s a comparison that must be noted.
